What is Harbin about? (spoiler-free)

The year is 1909, and Korea is under Japanese control. The film opens on Ahn Jung-geun crossing the frozen Tumen River, a leader of the Korean independence movement carrying the weight of the fight so far.

A year later, his comrades gather in Vladivostok, all sharing one goal. But they are not alone. A Japanese army officer named Mori Tatsuo is tracking their every move, and as the group makes its way toward the city of Harbin in northern China, suspicion and tension grow. What happens along the way is best discovered on screen.

Hyun Bin’s role: who was Ahn Jung-geun?

Ahn Jung-geun (1879–1910) was a Korean independence activist. In 1909, he shot Itō Hirobumi, Japan’s first prime minister and the first Resident-General of Korea, at Harbin Station. In the film, he is a lieutenant general of the Korean Independence Army.

Ahn is a national hero in Korea, but the film is less interested in the legend than in the man. It shows him doubting, afraid and burdened by grief and guilt. Hyun Bin plays him with restraint, and that quiet performance holds the whole film together.

Why watch Harbin?

It is a thriller first, a history lesson second. The film focuses on the preparation for the mission rather than the mission itself, so most of the tension comes from planning, secrecy and trust. You can follow it without knowing Korean history. Knowing that Korea was under Japanese rule at the time is enough.

It looks stunning. Think snowy rivers, dark train carriages and deep shadows. The cinematographer is Hong Kyung-pyo, who also shot Parasite, and the film was shot across South Korea, Latvia and Mongolia.

It has been recognized. Harbin was a Gala Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the film Grand Prize at the 2025 Baeksang Arts Awards.

Good to know: The film has Korean and Japanese dialogue and is serious in tone. If you are looking for something light, start with another Hyun Bin title (see below).
