What is The Great Flood about? (spoiler-free)
On what appears to be the last day on Earth, a massive flood sweeps across the planet after an asteroid impact. An-na (Kim Da-mi), an AI researcher, notices water seeping into her apartment and rushes out with her young son, Ja-in.
Just then, Hee-jo (Park Hae-soo), a member of the security team at an AI research institute, appears and pulls them to safety. The three head for the roof, but a giant wave hits the building and their escape plan falls apart. Where the story goes from there is something to discover on your own.
One thing worth knowing going in: despite the title and the trailers, this is not only a disaster movie. Netflix itself calls it a sci-fi disaster film, and the story grows into something bigger than a race to the roof.

The main characters
An-na (Kim Da-mi) is an AI researcher and a single mother. Her fierce need to protect her son drives the entire film. This was Kim Da-mi’s first time playing a mother, and even critics who disliked the movie praised her performance. You may know her from The Witch: Part 1, Itaewon Class and Our Beloved Summer.
Hee-jo (Park Hae-soo) works in security for the AI research institute and is the one sent to get An-na to safety. Park Hae-soo is best known to global audiences as Sang-woo in Squid Game. Here, he plays a character who is not the typical action hero.
Cast and characters
| Actor | Character | Who they are |
|---|---|---|
| Kim Da-mi | An-na | An AI researcher and single mother fighting to save her son |
| Park Hae-soo | Hee-jo | A security team member at the AI research institute, sent to rescue An-na |
| Kwon Eun-seong | Ja-in | An-na’s six-year-old son, the reason she keeps going |
The supporting cast also includes Kang Bin, Jeon Yu-na and Park Byung-eun. We have left out their character details on purpose, because in this film, saying who someone is can give away too much.
Why watch The Great Flood?
It was a global hit. In its first three days, the film racked up 27.9 million views, ranked No. 1 in 54 countries and reached the top 10 in 93.
It then stayed at No. 1 on Netflix’s non-English movie chart for four weeks in a row, and it became the first Korean film to enter Netflix’s all-time top 10 for non-English movies. (Netflix counts a “view” as total hours watched divided by runtime.)
It looks impressive. The flooded apartment building is the star of the early scenes. The filmmakers used a technique that makes dry sets look underwater, and Kim Da-mi said she was surprised by how convincing it turned out.
It is a big swing. The film tries to combine a disaster story, a mother-and-son drama and a science fiction concept. Critics were divided: some felt it had more ideas than it could develop, while others admired its ambition. Viewers outside Korea were generally warmer than those at home, praising the fresh premise and the performances.
You might love it if you enjoy twisty sci-fi, you are a fan of Kim Da-mi or Park Hae-soo, or you want a shorter movie that gives you plenty to talk about afterward.
You might not love it if you want a straightforward rescue-and-escape disaster movie. Knowing that the story shifts gears will help you enjoy it for what it is.
